The Gothic castle

It was built at the turn of the XII and the XIII centuries and it is the best evidence how old city is Oswiecim and how much this city loses because of given stigma “a city – death camp”. The castle at the same time is a seat of a historic and archaeological museum.

The Church of Our Lady Help of Christians.

It is a living evidence of former brilliance and also a testimony of tumultuous history of Oswiecim (the church was burgeoning and was falling into a ruin together with the city).

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

(from the XIV century) – it is worth to pay attention to a characteristic square tower built in the XIX century – this element recurs in temples of Oswiecim and its neighbourhood areas.

The town square

Charming restored field located right in the heart of the city allow to feel an atmosphere of the nineteenth century Galician urban centre. The square itself was demarcated in the Middle Ages. Today it is this the place where town heart beats. It is worth to check a gastronomic offer of this place.

Oswiecim – history of the city

Those, who think that Oswiecim is only a concentration camp, for sure will be surprised by information that a settlement in this area occurred already thousand years ago. And a history of the city consist of a diverse periods: a history of an unusual glory, fortune and abundance was interspersed by periods of a total fall.

First age of splendour of Oswiecim has been lasting for four centuries (from XIII to XVII age) and it was related with a trade development (among others a salt). The marks of this period of time are among others a Gothic castle from XII century and the parish church from XVI century. However even the longest bucolic tale some day has the end. The wave of destruction reached Oswiecim, which almost completely razed the city from a world map. It was caused among others by the Swedes who plundered our country in the XVII century.

Second age of a splendour has been lasting much shorter – from a half of the XIX century to the second world war outbreak. Again a reason of this heyday was a localization of the city, this time nearby the railway line connecting Cracow with Vienna. However that times were also preceded by disasters like fires and floods. And when it was looking like all the bad things which possessed to touch a city on the Sola river – has already touched it – the second world war started. And then it was decided to place inside the city a headquarter of the hell on the Earth.

The war ended and a life began to return to be normal. New housing estates arose and new working places appeared. First tourist trips has started to visiting the camp to make sure if that what they read about – really happened…

The Auschwitz-Birkenau is not only the biggest death camp but also a place which still can surprise by its own character. A symbol of terror and of the biggest holocaust in the XX century is not only the biggest in the world extermination camp. It is also an admonition and a place where each one of us can experience unique lesson. Created in 1940, the camp, in the beginning was going to be one of many German labor camps.

A willingness to exterminate the Jews and to get rid of everybody who has been recognized as an enemy of the German nation, caused however that the Auschwitz camp quickly has been changed to a mighty factory of death. Since 1942, so from an acknowledgement of a plan of complete extermination of the Jewish population, till the liberation, about one and a half of a million people has been murdered here. Although an extermination contained almost thirty nations, a majority of victims were the Jews. Also the Romanies, the Polish and the Soviet soldiers were landing in here but among the prisoners were also the Germans, who were openly criticizing the Nazi policy.

After the war, a museum has been created here, which remembers about those who died in gas chambers and who were killed at the wall of death. It remembers about those who fell down because of hunger and exhaustion. The museum is one of the most meaningful martyrdom memorial in the world. It consist of two camps: the Auschwitz and the distant of about four kilometres Birkenau camp. The first one remained unchanged and it’s the most characteristic elements are the bunkhouses made of bricks. The seedy Birkenau camp then, can amaze by the silence, calmness and a lot of greenery. With such surroundings a crematorium relic and rare already wooden barracks look unusually. However the main object of interest in this part of the camp is a railway ramp, where the selection of prisoners had been performing. About those, who were referring straight to a crematorium and those who died after a few months of a hard work and a hunger, the monument placed in a central part of the Birkenau camp remains.

It includes not only blocks, barracks and the other genuine buildings. That, what make absolutely the most staggering impression, are the things which belonged to the prisoners:

  • shoes
  • suitcases
  • jugs
  • prostheses
  • glasses
  • brushes
  • combs
  • vessels and a lot of others.

Its commonness while connected with its accumulation to huge quantities – speak much more dramatically than the pictures from these times. Obviously, it must be said that a visit to places where the prisoners were abiding, is also shocking. The wall of executions, residues after crematories, the cell of the saint Maksymilian Kolbe death, inscriptions left on the walls by the embedded – there is no need to have a great imagination to feel on an own skin this situation tragedy, in which the persons coming to the concentration camps found.

In turn, a tangible testimony of the torturers cruelty, are the things such as an already empty cans for the Zyklon B – a gas using in the gas chambers – or the bludgeons or the sticks using for prisoner's beating.

Gloomy, and simultaneously unusually valuable from the historic point of view, the camps, are important objects on the UNESCO list. During a trip to such cities as Oswiecim and the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, everyone of us can understand better a question of the Holocaust and the Second World War. Everyone can also see how look the consequences of a human hate and of a nationalist ideology.

A visit in the museum is for many of the visitors an event, which cannot be deleted from a memory. That what we find in this place, overwhelms strongly and makes an impression of participation in some unreal night dream, which unfortunately really once happened…

The museum has been visiting by over than a million persons from over than a hundred countries each year.

The museum is located on the street: Oświęcim, Więźniów Oświęcimia 20.
